Yamaha first achieved success in the custom bike market with its Virago - a 750cc shaft-drive V-twin. Then, in 1988, came the XV535 - on which the XVS650 would eventually be based. It was small, cute and sold in large numbers. Its size, weight and manageability made it a favourite with new riders, returning bikers and, especially, women. The XVS650 arrived in 1997 and the new name - Drag Star in Europe and V-Star in the USA - reveals Yamaha's inspiration for the styling. Less 'Liberace' than its predecessors, the new bike finally put to rest the Captain America look.
Two years later, Yamaha added the XVS1100 - similar in style to the smaller-engined model but with a new chassis. It was available in standard or classic trim, with a special Silverado version for the USA - complete with windshield, saddlebags, studded seat and passenger backrest!
With 7000 models sold in the UK and second-hand prices from just £2750, these are desirable bikes. The drawback is the servicing costs - approx. £160 for a 6000 mile service from a Yamaha dealer. This despite the parts costing just £25.

The new manual provides fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions for DIY servicing, overhaul and repairs of the engine and transmission, fuel and ignition systems, suspension and steering, the braking system and the electrical system. Each task is given a spanner rating for complexity and experience required. Checking and adjusting the valve clearances is rated as three spanners out of five.
There are full-colour sections on the history of the models, on daily pre-ride checks and those all-important wiring diagrams, plus tools required and Haynes Hints. For instance, when changing the brake fluid how to tell when all the old fluid has been displaced.
The section guiding readers through the UK MOT test and how to prepare for it will prove invaluable. Other useful information includes how to prepare your Yamaha for winter storage and ready it for the road again in the spring, explanations of technical terms, a guide to fault finding and security considerations.
