Are you one of the lucky 6,000 people in the UK who have bought a new Kawasaki ER-6? Maybe you acquired yours secondhand or perhaps you're just thinking about buying one.
Kawasaki does not bring out new lightweights often and the ER-6 sticks with the twin cylinders of its predecessor, the ER-5. However, the engine is not the main feature of this machine but the packaging - the ER-6n, where the 'n' stands for 'naked', packs a lot of character into a small, manageable bike. The rear suspension is offset to the right, a major styling cue, and the bodywork is both minimalist and modern. The ER-6f (for fairing) offers greater weather protection and the longer front fork is the only other significant difference between the models. Both models received a makeover for 2009, three years after their introduction, which resulted in a much sharper look.
Now, in its 50th anniversary year, Haynes has released a Kawasaki ER-6f and ER-6n Manual for these Kawasaki ER models. Such is the popularity of these manuals that a remarkable 150 million have been sold worldwide.
The new Kawasaki ER-6f and ER-6n Manual covers the ER650 (ER-6n) from 2006 to 2010 and the EX650 (ER-6f) from 2006 onwards, both models with a 649cc engine. As with all Haynes manuals, it can help owners decide what work must be done, even if they choose to have it done by a dealer. Some people will use the manual to tackle the work themselves and for many simpler jobs, DIY may be quicker than arranging an appointment to get the motorcycle into a dealer and making the trips to leave it and pick it up. More importantly, avoiding the expense the shop must pass on to cover its labour and overhead costs can save a lot of money. An added benefit is the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that owners get after doing the job themselves.
In the introduction, there is interesting background information about Kawasaki and its 'Green Meanies' bikes plus useful data on model development and identification numbers. The section on pre-ride checks takes the reader through fluid level checks, legal and safety checks plus tyres, suspension, steering and the drive chain.
There follows chapters on each of the main components - engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes and so on. The manual has illustrations and descriptions to show the function of the various components so that their layout can be understood. Tasks are described and photographed in a clear step-by-step sequence with details of any special tools required and a complexity rating given. There are sections on pre-ride checks and routine maintenance and instructions for straightforward tasks such as checking fluid levels and filter changes, plus repair information such as clutch plate renewal and engine overhaul.
- Step-by-step procedures with hundreds of illustrations and photographs.
- Written from hands-on experience using commonly available tools.
- Haynes Hints provide invaluable short cuts and professional know-how.
- Tool Tips save time and money and reduce frustration.
- 'Spanner ratings' indicate how difficult each job is.
