1st February 2019: In the history of armoured fighting vehicles, few have been so successful or extensively employed as the French-built Panhard AML armoured car. Now Haynes takes a look under the hatches of this remarkable AFV in The Panhard Armoured Car Enthusiasts’ Manual, out this month.

The AML has been in continuous service since 1961 with the armies of 52 nations – it is THE universal armoured car. First used during the war in Algeria in the early 1960s, the AML has fought in numerous wars around the globe, notably in the Middle East and Africa, and up to the present day with ongoing operations against Boko Haram in Nigeria and Chad.

The Panhard AML and Eland is the latest modern armoured fighting vehicle to receive the Haynes treatment. The book is fully illustrated with archive images, technical drawings and detailed photography and includes rare insights into the recovery and restoration of a Panhard AML to running order by the French Army Re-enactment Group.

Speaking about the Panhard Armoured Car Enthusiasts’ Manual, author Simon Dustan says: “The AML has seen extensive combat in virtually all of the wars in Africa and the Middle East since 1961 including the war on ISIS in 2016. It also fought on the side of the Argentinians during the Falklands War in 1982.

“As an armoured car enthusiast, I was excited to finally give the Panhard AML and Eland the full Haynes treatment. Excitingly, the centrepiece of this manual is the French Army Re-enactment Group’s Panhard AML 60 and 90 vehicles, which have been fully restored to running condition.”

The Panhard AML and Eland Enthusiasts’ Manual is the latest to join Haynes’ growing fleet of military vehicle titles, which includes the Challenger 1 Main Battle Tank, Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and M1 Abrams manuals.
